Thomas Norbert Stanley Bunker-Whitney was born on February
8th, 1987, whilst his parents were living in sunny Barcelona, Spain. He was
born with a deformity that couldn’t be dealt with properly in Spain becuase
his mum's Spanish wasn't good enough to find out all the details, so had to
travel back to england a few months later for treatment. 8 years, 5 operations,
and a lot of therapy later, Norbi was left with one shorter (~1.5cm) and significantly
weaker leg, and a lot of back troubles. This would prove to be a lot of trouble
when it came to playing any sport or even walking any distance, and should definitely
have ruled juggling out.
Norbi took a keen interest in magic at a young age. After seeing
his older brother’s Marvin’s Magic set, Norbi begged his
mum to buy him a set for Christmas. He, as any good magician, would practice
for hours in front of a mirror, in hope of one day performing everything he
had learned. He ended up performing a magic routine of about 15-20 minutes at
a number of venues around the UK, including such festivals as ‘the Big
Green Gathering’, ‘Buddha-Field’, ‘Lizard festival',
and a private birthday show in one of the backstage areas of ‘Glastonbury
Festival’. Norbi even performed a spot in a nightclub called ‘Grey
area’ in Hackney, London. These all happened within the same year, and
at the tender age of 7.
In June of 2000 Norbi was given a diabolo at the end of a festival
and shown some of the very basic tricks. He would practice for hours a day,
learning anything and everything he could from reading books, and even creating
a number of his own tricks. Due to a lack of any other outside influence, Norbi’s
progress soon stopped, and he almost completely gave up diabolo until mid 2001.
Then, in late 2002 (Oct 15th to be precise), after about a year of seriously
practising diabolo again and becoming quite envious of his juggling friends,
Norbi spent over a week teaching himself the basic 3 ball cascade. After just
2 years of juggling, he was regularly performing up to 8 objects at once on
stage.
From
there on out, Norbi's career as a juggler, and performer, flourished. Over the
next few years he placed in a number of competitions, and earned himself 4th
place in the world at diabolo, 2 years running. Not only that, but Norbi also
won a gold medal at his level, in the WJF World Juggling Championships, in Las
Vegas. Since then, he has devoted his time less to sport-juggling, and more
on his performance. Paying off, Norbi has performed his routines in venues across
the globe, and is currently filling his summer with circus work.
Norbi is currently studying at l'École de Cirque de Québec, in Canada...
